Returning to the InnerVerse Podcast

I was kindly invited by Chance Garton to return to his InnerVerse Podcast, to continue our conversation on numerous facets of J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories of Middle-earth and the Land of Faërie, and to explore what it means to recover and integrate mythic consciousness into our awareness.

The first hour of our conversation is available publicly, and can be accessed through the InnerVerse website or listened to directly below. In the first hour, we discussed the esoteric wisdom of Tolkien’s works and how in the Perilous Realm, one will find mystical enchantment and mortal danger in equal measure. We spoke about legends of the huldufólk, Iceland’s hidden people, the mythic consciousness of our ancestors, and how the love of language, the magic spelling of words, and the archetype of the inner child can help one recover the beauty and wonder of life.

In the second hour, which is available to Patreon supporters of InnerVerse, Chance and I explored the misenchantment (a term coined by Matt Segall) of culture through media and materialistic belief systems, Tolkien’s final tale Smith of Wootton Major, the Queen of Faërie at the heart of the imaginal realm, and the Elvish mediators between spirit and matter. The second hour is well worth the listen, and Chance’s podcast is most definitely worth supporting as well through Patreon!

Transits for the Gemini Lunation

The month of the twins dawns with Venus already retrograde, moving through the sign of Gemini in concert with Mercury, the Sun, and the Moon. The planet of love and beauty is leading a social life this lunation, making alignments to Neptune, Mars, Mercury, the Sun, and of course the Moon over the duration of this month. Mars entered the watery sign of Pisces not long ago, saturating its energy and submerging its fires in preparation for the exact Mars-Neptune conjunction in mid-June.

This lunation cycle is especially dynamic because eclipse season is once again upon us, and the Full Moon will be a Lunar Eclipse, and the next New Moon will be a Solar Eclipse. Eclipses can have many meanings, but one is of learning to see by a different kind of light: not the brightness of day nor even the pearly glow of the night’s orb, but rather the light of darkness itself.

Gemini Lunar Cycle

Transits of the Gemini Lunation

*May 22 @ 10:39 am PT* The New Moon in Gemini aligns in a tight trine to Saturn in Aquarius, with Mercury-Venus in the same sign closely square to Neptune. With Mercury’s sign brimming with celestial bodies, the themes of communication, language, and thought patterns will be at the fore during this lunation. How do the words you choose and the way you communicate allow you to tend to your dreams, and what illusions might you be harboring in your mind and heart?

*May 25 @ 7:58 am PT* A softly sizzling talent trine forms between the Cancer Moon, Mars in Pisces, and Uranus in Taurus. Although dampened by the weight of the water and earth signs, the alignments between these three planets can bring some sparks of anger, frustration, or just pure physical energy. Be conscious of how that energy might be diffuse in the field, rather than clearly directed.

*May 27 @ 12:02 pm PT* Leo Moon sextiles Sun in Gemini, the first alignment of the two luminaries since the New Moon. The Moon has just completed its monthly opposition to the Pluto-Jupiter-Saturn stellium in late Capricorn and early Aquarius, which can correlate with a complex sequence of emotions: deep turmoil, releasing joy, contraction and isolation. We are riding rough seas these days, and it can be most felt in our emotional bodies and intimate relations.

*May 28 @ 11:09 am PT* Mercury swims out of its home sign of Gemini into the deep emotional waters of Cancer, where it will linger until August 4. Mercury’s long sojourn in the Moon’s sign is due to it getting caught in Cancer’s tides, swimming retrograde beginning late on June 17. While this transit may support giving voice to one’s feelings, it can also lead to dissolved, emotional thinking.

*May 29 @ 8:30 pm PT* The waxing quarter Moon in Virgo squares the Sun in Gemini, while the Moon simultaneously forms an exact trine to Uranus in Taurus. What changes are being initiated at this time within your intimate inner world? What changes need to be initiated? Are you feeling emotionally restless, erratic, playful, eruptive, rebellious?

*June 1 @ 2:28 am PT* Libra Moon makes a trine to the Sun and Venus in Gemini, bringing in some much-needed sweetness, love, beauty, and harmony. Nourish your heart and your body, be gentle with yourself, allow softness into your being.

*June 2 @ 5:41 pm PT* Retrograde Venus in Gemini squares Mars in Pisces. The lovers connect but there is tension and friction between them. Will this manifest as a fight or an argument with a loved one, or will the tensions give rise to erotic creative expression?

*June 3 @ 10:44 am PT* The Sun and Venus meet each other in Gemini, initiating Venus’s transition from the evening star to the morning star. We now must awaken early to see the diamond glory of Venus gracing the pre-dawn sky. What does rising early in order to witness beauty cultivate in your life, as opposed to waiting for darkness to fall to behold the celestial symbol of the heart?

*June 5 @ 12:12 pm PT* The Sagittarius Full Moon opposes the Sun and Venus in Gemini, forming a T-square to Mars in Pisces. This Full Moon is also a Lunar Eclipse. Traditionally viewed as malefic, the Moon falling into Earth’s shadow when it should be in the full bloom of light can show us the darker, hidden reaches of the unconscious. Take time to go inward, to inquire into the fiery depths of your heart, and then cleanse and purify your being once the shadow has passed.

*June 6 @ 12:11 pm PT* The Sun in Gemini square Mars in Pisces, perfecting the alignment that was potently activated in yesterday’s Lunar Eclipse. Attention is drawn to our will, assertion, energy, anger, aggression. Find an outlet for this fire hose, lest the fire evaporate the waters to steam.

*June 8 @ 5:54 pm PT* The Moon sweeps through the Pluto-Jupiter-Saturn stellium, crossing from Capricorn to Aquarius in the early evening. Mirroring the Moon’s opposition to these planets on May 27, how do your emotions feels? Deep, expansive, constraining? Sometimes there can be too much to feel to really sort it all out, but know the waves will pass through your body and transform into something new.

*June 10 @ 7:35 am PT* The disseminating Aquarius Moon makes its waning trine to the Sun in Gemini. The trine brings a harmonious balance between inner and outer, offering opportunities to share with the wider community the thoughts and insights that have been gestating during the lunation.

*June 11 @ 2:37 am PT* Gemini Sun squares Neptune in Pisces, bringing the focus to the enchanted dreamworld, the realm of images, fantasies, visions, the mystical, spiritual, and religious. One’s sense of self may feel dissolved, but be wary of the mirage of deluded inflation, identifying the ego with our spiritual ideals. Remember you are part of a whole, although don’t forget the multitude is also within you.

*June 12 @ 7:13 am PT* Mars and Neptune at last conjoin in Pisces, two contrary archetypes unifying in water’s mutable sign. This merging of Mars’s fiery will with Neptune’s dreamy idealism aligns with the waning quarter Moon in late Pisces, thus the luminaries illuminate Mars-Neptune in their Solar and Lunar rays. Vital energy may be low or feel like it is leaking away, or it may be turned inward in reverie and fantasy. We may feel prickly, like an emotional jellyfish, stinging unconsciously. Or we may find the spiritual warrior within, aligning our consciousness with right action.

*June 15 @ 5:11 pm PT* The balsamic Aries Moon makes its closing sextile to the Sun in late Gemini, bringing the lunation cycle to its final stage. What last actions do you want to take before entering into the pregnant dark of the next New Moon?—a New Moon that will also be a Solar Eclipse and the Summer Solstice.

*June 17 @ 9:59 pm PT* Mercury turns retrograde in the late hours of the night, swimming upstream through Cancer until July 12. This watery retrograde may bring up many memories, perhaps from childhood or experiences from long ago. It is a time to reflect, review, revise, unlearn and relearn, taking our sensibilities into account so we can move forward with greater wholeness.

*June 18 @ 4:08 pm PT* Mars in Pisces sextiles Pluto in Capricorn, creating the most subtle and harmonious angle between otherwise fiery, volcanic, and destructive forces. One can access tremendous strength of will under such a transit, especially when approached consciously and for creative purposes.

*June 20 @ 11:41 pm PT* The Sun slides into Cancer to mark the Summer Solstice, but falls behind the shadow of the New Moon, creating a Solar Eclipse to mark the first day of summer. A Solar eclipse in the Moon’s sign subsumes the Sun’s summer light and brings it down to illuminate a darker realm. Winter comes into the heart of summer for a moment, recalling the last eclipse cycle that fell in late December of last year. Mars in Pisces sextiling Jupiter in Capricorn at least can give us some confidence that the heroic light will return, perhaps the wiser for its underworld journey.

Gemini New Moon

The Astrology Podcast

A dream came true for me this week when I had the opportunity to be a guest on Chris Brennan’s The Astrology Podcast. We ranged through a variety of topics, beginning with my background in archetypal astrology and what it is like to be a second generation astrologer, before picking up the topics of the Archai journal, why C.G. Jung’s Red Book is important and relevant to astrologers, and the connection between outer planetary cycles and the unfolding dynamics of world events.

To listen to the episode: Becca Tarnas in Outer Planet Cycles and Jung’s Red Book

I am deeply grateful to Chris Brennan for the invitation to converse with him on one of my favorite podcasts!

Transits for the Taurus Lunation

Taurus season begins just as pale green leaves and tender shoots are unfurling, and the white Pacific dogwoods are in bloom on the hills around my home. The lunation starts off with a spark as the New Moon conjoins Uranus, initiating new creative innovations. As the Sun traverses the fixed earth sign ruled by Venus, the planet Venus moves slowly through Gemini, eventually stationing and moving retrograde. Both the Sun and Mercury, as well as the whirling Moon, all illuminate the Jupiter-Saturn-Pluto stellium in their unique archetypal ways.

I needed to take a break from writing these transit updates for the last two months in order to turn all my energetic and emotional resources towards weathering our current pandemic storm. However, I will be posting retrospective transits soon to help give more of a picture of the unfolding dynamics during the Pisces and Aries lunations.

Scorpio Full Moon

Transits of the
Taurus Lunation

*April 22 @ 7:26 pm PT* New Moon in Taurus conjunct Uranus and square Saturn in Aquarius. Throughout the day the Moon sweeps through a square with Pluto, Jupiter, and Saturn in succession, before disappearing into the Sun’s rays. Plumbing the emotional depths, heights, and limits before awakening to new potentials. Sow your seeds in the rich, moldy soil.

*April 23 @ 10:30 pm PT* Moon in Taurus squares Mars in Aquarius. Relational and emotional friction and heat, inflammation of the senses. Direct that fiery energy toward practical home tasks, scrubbing dirt from the forgotten corners, or dance to intense music that pounds rhythmically through your veins.

*April 25 @ 12:36 am PT* Mercury in Aries squares Pluto and Jupiter in Capricorn. Depth and breadth of understanding, desire to probe beneath the surface of grand ideas, to avoid superficial conversations. Beware of manipulation of language, of doublespeak. Respect the blessed power of story.

*April 26 @ 2:01 am PT* Taurus Sun conjoins Uranus, as the Moon greets Venus in Gemini. What new initiative crackles into waking potential? What inspires you to try something different? Notice the need to rebel, to be free, to feel liberated. A touch of sweetness may linger through the day as well, a gentle heart connection.

*April 27 @ 12:53 pm PT* After a fortnight drying out in Aries, Mercury puts down roots in Taurus, approaching the awakened Sun-Uranus conjunction. Thinking and ideas become more grounded and earthy, oriented towards material needs being met, perhaps in innovative ways.

*April 28 @ 10:28 am PT* Mercury squares Saturn in Aquarius, narrowing the thought processes to the practical and detail-oriented. Bring consciousness to negative thought patterns, words of criticism and judgement of yourself and others.

*April 29 @ 6:06 pm PT* The Moon sweeps regally from Cancer to Leo, passing opposite the Pluto, Jupiter, then Saturn on the way. As has often been a pattern in the last months, the influence of the Lunar archetype in hard aspect to this heavy stellium may lead to feeling personally the great weight of the world at this time.

*April 30 @ 1:38 pm PT* The waxing quarter Leo Moon square Sun in Taurus, aligns with the exact Mercury-Uranus conjunction. There is a tension between inspired ideas and the ability to put them into action. Note them down, no matter how rapid and flurried the thought process—the time will ripen, but the seed is only putting out leaves for now.

*May 3 @ 8:52 pm PT* Slowing Venus in Gemini makes the first of three exact squares to Neptune in Pisces, which will occur during the next three months. The Moon in Virgo forms a T-square with the Venus-Neptune square on this day. Enchantment, illusion, chasing the fairy-tale romance, seeking the image of the divine in the beloved. Questions of what is real and what is a dream permeate the heart.

*May 4 @ 2:41 pm PT* The Sun and Mercury conjoin in Taurus, still within orb of Uranus’s fluttering inspiration. Shining a light on grounded communication patterns, needs, and comforts, while still carrying sparkles of the previously awakened innovative approach.

*May 6 @ 11:31 am PT* The Scorpio Moon highlights the tension of opposites that characterizes the Saturn-Uranus archetypal complex, when it forms a T-square with Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus. What feels rigid, fixed, and constraining that leads to you to want to break free? Will it happen suddenly, like lighting striking stone, or can you restructure creatively? Although the Moon illumines the alignment today, these themes will continue to play out in the coming years.

*May 7 @ 3:45 am PT* The Full Moon in Scorpio opposes the Taurus Sun. Many archetypal polarities are present: the Solar and Lunar, Venus and Mars as rulers of these opposing signs. Mercury in Taurus quietly sextiles Neptune. What dreams are born from the union of opposites, the heiros gamos, the sacred marriage? Water your soil, to see what kind of potent flower blooms.

*May 9 @ 6:17 am PT* Mercury in Taurus trines Pluto, the next major aspect Mercury makes within this lunation to the Capricorn stellium. The deep conversations and probing inquiries surrounding April 25 may resurface, but perhaps with greater resolve and less tension than previous weeks. Take the opportunity to stay in the meaningful engagement with your learning process.

*May 10 @ 9:16 am PT* Mercury passes next through the trine to Jupiter, as the Sun in Taurus sextiles Pisces Neptune. The storyteller, the dreamer, the weaver of myth and folktale. The gently illumined imagination gives images to the orator’s tongue.

*May 11 @ 2:58 pm PT* Mercury makes a fiery square to Mars in the final degree of Aquarius, before entering into its sign of rulership, Gemini. Home for now, Mercury can win a good debate, but may also lead to burns from rash arguments.

*May 12 @ 11:45 pm PT* In the late hours between May 12 and 13, Mars splashes into Pisces as Venus turns retrograde at 21° Gemini. Venus will traverse backwards through Mercury’s sign until June 25, spending a total of four months in Gemini. A concentration of Venusian themes, likely connected to communication and relational exchanges, will thicken throughout this time, going back and revisiting all that has reverberated in the heart since early April.

*May 14 @ 11:06 pm PT* The Sun trines Pluto in Capricorn, on the heels of the waning quarter Moon in Aquarius. The Sun is making a several day harmonious sweep across the Pluto-Jupiter-Saturn stellium, illuminating the intensity of the current time and perhaps offering some rays of light in the darkness. Find ways to gather back into yourself and integrate the many feelings that have arisen during this lunation, and the months prior.

*May 17 @ 9:40 am PT* The Sun in late Taurus makes a warm trine to Jupiter in Capricorn. Perhaps a ray of hope for transformation at both personal and collective levels. Nurture optimism as you would gently blow on burning coals to bring them back aflame.

*May 20 @ 6:49 am PT* The Sun ingresses into Gemini, just as Venus returns for a second exact square to Neptune. Emphasis on the mental sphere, learning, communication, and understanding will dawn, leading towards the New Moon in this sign.
